The male PURPLE FINCH is often mistaken for the male HOUSE FINCH,
with whom it is sometimes seen at birdfeeders. The male PURPLE FINCH
is more of a raspberry colour. It is also similar to the male PINE GROSBEAK.

The female HOUSE FINCH and PURPLE FINCH can easily be mistaken for
a SPARROW, or for each other. Both have dark stripes on the
sides and the belly, distinct from most sparrows. Although the male is similar
in appearance to the male PINE GROSBEAK, the same does not apply to the females.
