The female HOUSE FINCH and PURPLE FINCH
can easily be mistaken for a SPARROW, or for each other.
The female Purple Finch has white around the eyes that is absent from
the female House Finch. Both have dark stripes on the
sides and the belly, distinct from most sparrows.
